The treble clef

Name and play the five notes from middle C up to G.

Your first page so far. This lesson writes on the blue.

A clef at the start of the staff says which notes the lines stand for. The treble clef, usually read by the right hand, curls round the second line from the bottom and makes it G, the G just above middle C. That's why it's also called the G clef.

Middle C sits below the staff, on a short line of its own called a ledger line. From there, read by steps: D in the space just under the bottom line, E on the bottom line, F in the first space, and G on the second line, the one the clef curls round.

Many people learn the lines and spaces with a sentence. A popular one: the lines from the bottom are E, G, B, D, F, Every Good Boy Does Fine, and the spaces spell FACE. Any version you like is fine. Use it to check yourself, and lean on middle C and the G line, which are quicker.
